Permanent Roofline Lighting in Orangeville

In a town where December arrives early and stays, permanent lighting removes the two worst ladder days of the year. It goes up once, survives the snow because it sits under the eave, and is used every month rather than six weeks.

A permanent system is a row of individually controllable LED nodes set in a low-profile aluminum channel, fastened under the drip edge, along the fascia or behind the eavestrough line and colour-matched to the trim. A controller in the garage or basement plugs into a GFCI-protected outlet and joins your Wi-Fi; an app handles colours, patterns, brightness and schedules. These are products made and certified for permanent outdoor installation. That distinction matters, because ESA's guidance is that ordinary seasonal light strings are not meant to stay up all year.

What it does

  • Christmas. Red and green, classic warm white, or a soft twinkle, on at dusk and off when you choose.
  • Every other occasion. Orange for Halloween, colours for Diwali, Lunar New Year, Canada Day or a birthday, team colours on a game night. Changing it takes a minute.
  • Every other night. A soft warm white over the driveway and front steps, which on a dark January evening in Orangeville is the feature owners use most.

Which houses suit it

The two-storeys of Orangeville's newer subdivisions are ideal: long continuous aluminum eaves, a garage peak and an upper peak, and a garage outlet to feed from. Estate houses in Mono and the Caledon hills are also strong candidates, because their rooflines are long and high and a seasonal install there is a full day each way. Older brick houses can work where there is a sound soffit to mount into, but a house with short eaves and decorative trim is often better with seasonal lights.

Snow, ice and the eave

The channel sits under the eave, out of the path of the snow that slides off the roof and away from the ice that builds in the eavestrough through a winter with roughly 151 cm of snow. Nothing is clipped to the gutter for ice to lift or a thaw to tear off, and the nodes are sealed against moisture. A house with heavy ice damming should still have that looked at, because ice at the eave is an attic problem, and the mounting line is chosen to stay clear of it.

Heritage buildings

The Town lists lamp installations among the work that typically needs a heritage permit in a conservation district. Permanent lighting on a building in the downtown district or on a designated property is planned to mount into wood only, out of view where possible and removable without a mark, and you are asked to check with the Planning Division before it goes up. There is no fee to apply.

Power and electrical work

Most systems run from an existing exterior or garage GFCI outlet. Where a new outlet is needed, that is electrical work for hire, which ESA requires to be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor who files a notification of work and can give you ESA's Certificate of Acceptance; it is quoted separately and you are given the contractor's licence number. Running cost is small at the OEB's November 2026 prices, and schedules keep the lights off when nobody is watching. The cost page has a worked example.

Frequently asked questions

Is it visible in the daytime?

Barely. The channel is slim and colour-matched to the fascia or soffit. From the street it reads as part of the trim.

Does it survive an Orangeville winter?

It is designed to. It sits under the eave rather than on the gutter, so snow sliding off the roof and ice in the trough do not pull at it, and the nodes are sealed.

What happens if I sell?

It stays with the house as a fixture and the app account is handed over. How it is treated in the sale is between you and the buyer.
